The Fitehouse propaganda campaigns.
The "Rebuilding the Glory of Rock" Campaign
In an effort to inspire the masses and orient them toward the task of increasing the production of quality rock-n-roll goods and services, Fitehouse has circulated a series of propaganda materials. The following is a sample of the posters that made up our first propaganda campaign, entitled "Rebuilding the Glory of Rock." Click on the titles or the thumbnails to see the full size posters.
The use of Social Realism Art was done for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I just like the aestetic. Secondly, it is meant to be ironic -- Culture is not a commodity, it’s an interactive process – while its meaning is shaped by the community, it comes to life when it is experienced by the individual. It helps the individual understand his or her world. As such, you can’t really buy true culture. Nonetheless, the music industry treats music like a commodity. To think that music production can be manufactured centrally, marketed through calculated advertising campaigns and the use of statistical analysis and pushed out to nationwide target markets through a centralized distribution network seems to go against the very human need for music and culture. Somehow marketing and advertising have neutral or even positive connotations – Fitehouse is making light of the current state of centralized culture by borrowing heavily from the ideas/imagery of Soviet propaganda and central planning, applying it to rock-n-roll production – by not hiding that what we are doing is propaganda we hope to expose the real (and evil) propaganda that is behind the sale of mainstream music, marketed by the Big Five record label oligopoly.
The "Defending our Cultural Independence" Campaign
As we initiated our open source music Bomb campaign, it was clear we needed some new hard-hitting propaganda material. As such we have moved on from the ironicism of the "Rebuilding the Glory" propaganda to our new "Defending our Cultural Independence" campaign. This material highlights the clear parallels between Fitehouse's anti-Industry work and the work of our Founding Fathers. While the RIAA has done everything to portray file sharers as criminals, Fitehouse's propaganda makes it clear who the true patriots are and who's the outside power that's beseiging our cultural and creative independence!
